USPTO Sides with Patent Troll Company
There has been a setback for broadcasters fighting an effort by a patent holding company to collect money from stations using automation systems. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) upheld the validity of two patents held by DigiMedia (aka Mission Abstract Data).
DigiMedia is now asking the court to lift a stay on a lawsuit brought against a number of radio groups fighting efforts by DigiMedia to collect licensing fees. The case has been on hold since November 2011 when U.S. District Court Judge Leonard Stark ruled to let the Patent and Trademark Office complete its review first.
