Documentary film says broadcasters saved lives on April 27, 2011

A University of Alabama instructor has produced an award-winning, eight-minute documentary on the role of local television broadcasters in saving lives during the massive tornadoes that hit Tuscaloosa and Joplin, Mo., last year. Chandra Clark, instructor in the department of telecommunications and film, worked with director Scott Hodgson of the University of Oklahoma to make “Tornado Emergency: Saving Lives.”
The mini-documentary has since garnered a Telly Award, one of the most sought-after awards in the profession. The awards, according to the Telly Awards website, honor “the finest film and video productions, groundbreaking web commercials, videos and films, and outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs.”
The film was also awarded a Best of Competition Award by the Broadcast Education Association’s Festival of Media Arts.
“I think the main message is that broadcasters are there to serve the community,” Clark said. “And even though people complain they blow things out of proportion sometimes, this was the one time people have realized the role these folks truly play in saving lives.”
