2012 Internship Program

For Stations - EEO Credit Opportunity!

Stations who participate must be an active MAB member in good standing and must be able to host the intern for the complete term listed below. Summer or Fall internships are encouraged. Cost for member stations is $600 which is due 60 days prior to the start of the internship.

Interested stations must complete a registration form, submit a job description for the internship and be available to meet with various candidates prior to the internship. MABF will assist stations with finding candidates, if needed, and will handle all administrative work as it pertains to payment of the honorarium.

Purpose
In an effort to attract talented students to the field of broadcasting, the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Foundation (MABF), in cooperation with the MAB member stations, will coordinate student internships throughout Michigan.

Term
Summer or Fall 2012. Actual begin and end dates will be determined by the student and station. The MAB Foundation Internship program covers up to 12 hours per week for a 12-week period. Any time above that is the responsibility of the participating station.

Students
The prospective intern must be enrolled at a Michigan college, university or vocational school for the entire duration of their internship and must be pursuing a degree in broadcasting, telecommunication, media studies, engineering or related field.

Interns may, or may not, receive academic credit for the internship depending upon their individual academic requirements.

Interested students must sign a letter of intent to accept an internship if one is offered by a station participating in the MABF Internship Program.

MABF will offer a stipend to the intern in the amount of approximately $1,000 (based on current minimum wage) which will be mailed in three installments throughout the internship. The MAB Foundation will follow-up with the stations prior to mailing the checks to verify that each student is performing on a level that is satisfactory and in compliance with the expectations laid out before the internship begins.

Student Applications
Each prospective intern is required to complete and return to the MAB Foundation office the following items:

1.   Resume
2.   Recommendation letter from a faculty member
3.   200-300 word essay outlining their career goals
4.   Application form

The application deadline is May 31, 2012. The application will be reviewed and prioritized by the MAB Foundation and forwarded on to the participating stations and companies. Please specify if you would like your application sent to a particular participants. Participating stations and companies, not the MAB Foundation, will choose who to contact regarding their internship. Every attempt will be made to equitably balance the supply of applicants with the demands of the participating stations.

Evaluations
At the completion of the agreed upon internship term, both the station and the intern will prepare an evaluation letter for the Foundation detailing their respective reactions to the internship experience. These letters will be used in subsequent semesters to improve the selection and station assignment process.

Disputes
Any disputes arising during the term of the internship shall be resolved by the station and the student. The MAB Foundation would act as an arbiter only in the most difficult of situations. Both student and station will be required to submit a grievance in writing to the MAB Foundation.

Here is what previous participants in the program have to say…

“Receiving this internship through the Michigan Association of Broadcasters has been an amazing opportunity. Working for Q107 and ESPN 970 helped me gain practical experience in the field of radio promotions and sales. The knowledge I have gained has been more rewarding then any class I have taken so far in school. Not only will it look great on my resume but it has better prepared
me for the real world.”

- Jamie Waters, Northern Michigan University Student, Spring 2008 Intern – WMQT-FM (Marquette)

“Here at TV20 we take training interns for the real world as serious business. We understand that the internship is to benefit the intern more than the station. Therefore we make every effort to give interns an opportunity to be challenged and get involved in real-world producing. We have found that this benefits the station and more importantly the intern candidate. When you become fortunate enough to be given a candidate with good potential this becomes a win-win situation. This is what has
happened with our intern, Jillian Edwards. By our working step-by-step through the production process,
Jillian was not only able to learn how to produce but also how to apply her new skill set to a real-life piece that will be broadcast over our station. The internship process is extremely valuable not only to our station and the individual intern but also to the world of broadcasting at large.”

- Thomas J. Bader, Production Manager, WMYD-TV (Detroit)

"My time at the MAB has been time well spent. Coming from the news side of broadcasting, this internship gave me a whole new look and understanding of the entire spectrum of over-the-air radio and television. Through this internship, I gained an understanding of the importance of Michigan’s Emergency Alert System, and gained the skills to effectively manage users of the new EMnet system, which I am looking forward to seeing implemented across the state."
- Brett King, Michigan State University, Summer 2009 Intern – MAB Technical

“The staff and management of WKHM are very pleased with the quality of the candidates and students that we have received through this program.”
- Sue Goldsen, Vice President and Owner, Jackson Radio Works (WKHM-AM/FM & WIBM-AM)
