2008 Michigan High School and College Broadcast Awards

Contest Information
- NO entry fee.
- All entries are judged by Michigan broadcasters except the High School Radio and Television Sports PSA Categories which are judged by the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA.)
- NEW! The judges will be asked to judge each entry based on the following criteria: Technical Quality, Presentation and Content of Entry (how well it follows the category description). The judges will also be encouraged to give feedback on each entry. The feedback, when given, will be returned to the student after the competition.
- Awards may be given for 1st, 2nd, and Honorable Mentions in each category. Each first place winning entry receives three (3) points; second place winning entry receives two (2) points; and Honorable Mention winning entry receives one (1) point.
- Awards will be presented on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 during the Main Luncheon of the Great Lakes Broadcasting Conference and Expo at the DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids.
- NEW! Station of the Year Award – The Station of the Year award will be presented in the following divisions: college television; college radio; high school television; and high school radio. To win the Station of the Year award, the school(s) must receive the most cumulative points in all categories entered. More than one station in each division may be awarded the Station of the Year award. There will be no tie breaker.
Contest Rules
- Up to four (4) people may be listed as a participant on an entry.
- All Michigan college, high school and trade school students are welcome to enter.
- All entries must be submitted by mail on either a cassette tape, VHS, Compact Disc (CD) or DVD.
- Different categories must be on separate entries. Please complete a separate form for each entry. Each entry must be on a different tape, VHS, CD, DVD or cassette tape.
- Students may enter once in each category.
- Entries must be completely created and produced by students.
- Each entry must be labeled with the names of the entrant, school, address, class and category and be accompanied by an entry form. All entry forms must be typed or printed.
- Failure to comply with these guidelines will result in disqualification.
- All judge’s decisions are final.
- DEADLINE : All entries must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, December 14, 2007.
- All entries become the property of MAB Foundation. Entries will not be returned and may be aired for promotional purposes only.

2008 Awards Categories
College Television
- News Feature/Magazine Program - News story that is no more than five (5) minutes in length
- Daily Newscast/Sportscast – Newscast or sportscast that is no more than 30 minutes in length.
- Talk Show - A program that is no more than 30 minutes in length featuring issues of social importance, how-to programming or sports talk.
- Public Service Announcement - An announcement of general public interest not more than 60 seconds in length.
- Sports Play-by-Play - Sportscast or play-by-play of a sports event for no more than five (5) minutes.
- NEW! Station Activities Report– A report highlighting the station’s overall efforts throughout the past year. This entry may include a compilation tape or DVD showing the station’s community involvement. Entry must also include a 150-200 word essay about the station’s efforts.
High School Television
- News Feature/Magazine Program - News story that is no more than five (5) minutes in length.
- Daily Newscast/Sportscast – Newscast or sportscast that is no more than 30 minutes in length.

- MHSAA Sports PSA - A generic PSA that is either 30 or 60 seconds in completed length promoting high school sports, sportsmanship and school approved extra curricular activities. OTHER INFORMATION
Judging: All entries were judged by professional radio and television broadcasters in Michigan except the High School Radio and Television Sports PSA Categories which are judged by the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA). All judges decisions are final, and judges may give awards for first, second and honorable mention.

Winners & Award Presentations: Winners of the general categories will be announced in February. Station of the Year winners will be announced during the Main Luncheon at the Great Lakes Broadcasting Conference & Expo on Tuesday, March 11 at the DeVos Place in Grand Rapids. Parents: Parents may attend the award ceremony at the cost of $25 per person. Parents may register directly online by visit the GLBC page.
Other students: If you are a high school or college student and did not win an award, you are still invited to attend the GLBC. Register using the special GLBC student rate.
