Mission Statement


The Michigan Association of Public Broadcasters is a partnership created to serve the people of the State of Michigan through the growth of public broadcasting


The mission of Michigan Association of Public Broadcasters (MAPB) is to serve the citizens of Michigan through the encouragement and support of the development, growth and the coordination of public broadcasting throughout Michigan. Public broadcasting is unique in its commitment and ability to serve Michigan's citizens. Through a partnership of its radio and television stations, bonded together by a critical interdependency, MAPB provides a forum for the development of the ways in which public broadcasting can serve the State of Michigan. MAPB, as a prime statewide resource for communications technology, can become a catalyst for action through timely examination and presentation of statewide issues. It can augment the impact of state agencies and assist the individual stations and communities.


Committed to sharing and interpreting the resources and experience of Michigan with the nation and the world;


As a participatory enterprise, public broadcasting ties together each station's community based publics. It is an integral part of Michigan's quality of life, a story it tells every day of the year through a myriad of programming and services. MAPB encourages and enhances the sharing of the knowledge of individual communities with the entire state.


Addressing the needs of citizens statewide through programs and services;


MAPB is a part of Michigan's future. It's goals are:


  • To share the resources and experience of Michigan with the nation and the world through the development and exportation of a unique Michigan brand of programming and services.

  • To serve its citizenry through the development of programming and services that are responsive to statewide needs and concerns such as economic development, unemployment, education, literacy and other mutually held purposes.

  • To seek, develop and maintain high levels of audience and viewer participation and public involvement which can capitalize on the combined community participation made possible through the MAPB partnership.


Involving the public in program related discussion and activity


To accomplish there goals and to strengthen the partnership of the stations, MAPB must strive to:


  • Establish itself as a prime statewide resource which will make MAPB a major force in Michigan's communications network.

  • Achieve statewide presence in broadcasting and service which can address the economic, political, cultural, educational and social needs of the people of Michigan.

  • Develop and maintain diversified statewide financial support.


Which can contribute to the quality of life in Michigan.


Michigan citizens can derive benefits from public broadcasting unavailable from other sources.


MAPB members provide:


  • an electronically based public forum for illuminating statewide issues

  • in-depth background information to the events of the day

  • a platform for exploring the arts and sciences

  • a statewide source of information for classroom enrichment

  • a catalyst for adult education through technology

  • programs that challenge the minds of Michigan's citizens with cultural, social, historical and scientific insights.


MAPB is committed to supporting each radio and television station that is charged with providing and managing communications services as a public trust.
