For over 30 years, Big Rapids High School sports have been broadcast live on stations now in the Big Rapids Radio Network. For the past 15 years the football has aired on WWBR-FM (Big Rapids), the Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball on WBRN-AM/FM (Big Rapids). With 4 radio stations serving a 5-county area, the Big Rapids Radio Network this year is delivering weekly live broadcasts and streams of 3 high school football games throughout this 2019 season.
WYBR-FM (Big Rapids) is broadcasting/streaming Remus Chippewa Hills Warrior football. WBRN AM/FM is broadcasting/streaming Reed City Coyote Football. WWBR-FM is broadcasting/streaming Big Rapids Cardinal football.
Sales Director JT Scarpelli produces a weekly podcast on Cardinal athletics called Cardinal Country available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and Spotify, and weekly “Coach’s Corner” Cardinal Football interview with head football coach Mike Selzer.
JT Scarpelli, News Director Steve Gove and Program Director Erik Etchison have spearheaded the expansion on football this year. “Carrying 3 separate teams all playing Friday evenings is ambitious. It’s really only possible because over the past few years we’ve been able to work with Central Michigan University students interested in developing a resume for live sports broadcasting,” JT Scarpelli explains, “and we’ve found some very genuine talent.”
Bastien Taylor carries play-by-play for the Chippewa Hills Warrior games. Riley Edwards handles the Reed City games with the help of fellow CMU students as well local Reed City insiders. Scarpelli (a Big Rapids Alumni himself), Jake Daugherty (a Big Rapids and Ferris State football alum) and CMU student James Young voice the Big Rapids games. Scarpelli added, “Support for the local schools – including athletics – is an important focus for the Big Rapids Radio Network. We’re excited to be able to do this and the enthusiasm from our community has been incredible!”
