RadioInsight.com reports that Midwest Communications flipped alternative rock station WZOX-FM (Portage-Kalamazoo) to the Adult Hits format “Jack FM…playing what we want” this morning, November 2.
In an hour shown on the station’s new website, Jack FM played songs from artists like Dead or Alive, Guns n’ Roses, Van Halen, Hot Chocolate, Crowded House, No Doubt, REO Speedwagon, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Goo Goo Dolls, Beatles and others.
Vice-President/Market Manager Kurt Luchs told MAB’s Dan Kelley: “We switched WZOX Z96.5 FM from Alternative to the Jack FM Adult Hits format at midnight last night because we feel it will serve the market better by attracting more listeners and thus work better for us. The Alternative format was well executed and had its coterie of avid fans. But in many cases Alternative is hard to win with in the ratings, and if you do win in ratings it can still be difficult to monetize.
Midwest Communications has a successful history with Jack FM. In our biggest market, Nashville, our AC station is number 1 and Jack is number 2. Jack has also worked for us in Duluth, Minnesota, and Appleton, Wisconsin. A big part of the success is due to the deep and varied music library.
I know about Jack FM because earlier this year I helped the format creators locate some new comedy writers (I got into radio as a comedy writer, coming from television and before that, the Onion). Jack FM is the only format with a full comedy writing staff. So you have this one-two punch of a great music library with this very entertaining, self-deprecating attitude. It’s just a lot of fun to listen to.
We’ll be heavily promoting the format flip in various ways in the coming months.”
An random hour playlist on the station’s website, show songs from artists like Dead or Alive, Guns n’ Roses, Van Halen, Hot Chocolate, Crowded House, No Doubt, REO Speedwagon, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Goo Goo Dolls, Beatles and others.
