WLEN Celebrates 55 Years of Service

Lenawee Broadcasting’s WLEN-FM (Adrian) celebrated 55 years of broadcasting on June 9.  Founded in 1965 by John W. Koehn, WLEN was the first FM radio station in Lenawee County. The stations first promotion was to give away FM radios so citizens could listen for entertainment and local news. WLEN began on the premise of service to the community and that premise still holds true today as the station has won numerous awards, both from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters as well as the National Association of Broadcasters.  This includes NAB’s prestigious Marconi Award (4 times), the NAB Crystal Radio Award for Community Service (5 times) and NABEF Service to America Award – Service to Children award (3 times).

Posting on the station’s Facebook page, WLEN President/General Manager Julie Koehn wrote “This is WLEN’s 55th Anniversary Week….as we reflect on our station’s values, community service is one of our pillars. We believe it is significant for us to take care of the non-profits that take care of our community and our citizens….we do this with things like our Hometown Hope Marketing grant every month and our Keep Lenawee Warm Coat Drive, our Celebrity Pie Auction for the Relay for life, collecting cleaning supplies for Seniors in our Senior Cleaners Closet and raising money for homeless Veterans as we Thank a Vet….In all we donate in excess of $800,000.00 in cash and in-kind services to local non-profits each and every year…all managed by our amazing team! Proud and blessed to work with such caring people!”
