Scripps’ WXYZ-TV (Detroit) will kick off the holiday season in Detroit this evening with coverage of the city’s official Christmas tree lighting at Campus Martius Park in the heart of downtown. The station will broadcast complete live coverage of the event during “Light Up the Season” from 7-8 p.m.
7 Action News anchors Dave LewAllen and Carolyn Clifford will host the program, along with 7 Action News anchor Glenda Lewis. Detroit’s own Grammy-nominated artist Mayer Hawthorne will headline the program along with the Detroit Youth Choir. World champion figure skater and two-time Olympian Yuka Sato will perform on the Frankenmuth rink at Campus Martius, along with Olympian Mirai Nagasu, the first American figure skater to land a triple axel at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
“The Christmas tree at Campus Martius Park has become the centerpiece for holiday celebrations in Detroit,” said Mike Murri, WXYZ and WMYD vice president and general manager. “We’re proud to join the Downtown Detroit Partnership and the DTE Foundation to share this wonderful holiday tradition with the people of Metro Detroit.”
A Michigan-grown, 60-foot Norway spruce tree will be decked out with more than 19,000 multi-colored lights and ornaments.
WXYZ will begin live coverage on Friday during 7 Action News at 4, 5 and 6 p.m. to capture the excitement of this holiday tradition including a special interview with Santa. “Light Up the Season” will be streamed live on wxyz.com and on the WXYZ Facebook page.
